Use salt to lengthen milk's shelf life

Monday - 3/21/2011, 9:15am  ET

UNDATED - A pinch of salt could keep your milk fresh longer.

You need to add the salt when you first buy your milk, says Bruce Lubin, coauthor of "Who Knew?"

Salt is a natural preservative that slows the growth of bacteria.

Lubin says the taste won't be affected, and you could double your milk's shelf life.

And by the way, the same goes for that reheated or burnt, bitter coffee. A dash of salt will take the edge off.
