Wilson Bridge project winding down, year before complete

WASHINGTON – Drivers have had to deal with more than a decade of construction-related delays because of the Wilson Bridge Project, and it will be at least another year before everything is finished.

While the newly constructed bridge has been in place for some time, work around the bridge continues.

And as the curtain comes down on one of the largest transportation undertakings in the D.C. region, project leaders are pointing toward the end.

“Ten years in the making and we are winding down. We (still) have the Telegraph Road project, which is the last major project for the program in terms of infrastructure improvements,” says Virginia Department of Transportation’s Regional Transportation Program Director John Lynch.

The Telegraph Road Interchange is a major piece to the overall Wilson Bridge project. Construction on the interchange is now 90 percent complete. The final road surface and road striping are expected to go down on the interchange next year.

As far as the Beltway lanes near the bridge, VDOT is expected to put final pavement down on both the Inner and Outer Loops this summer.

“When the kids go back to school, the Beltway will be free-moving through there, fingers crossed,” Lynch says.
