Poll: 4 in 10 area commuters spend more than 1 hr. in car

WASHINGTON - Four out of every 10 drivers in the D.C. region are in the car for an hour or longer every day. Take a closer look at the numbers from a new WTOP Beltway Poll, and you find that about one in every 10 drivers in the area spends more than two hours in the car every day.

This poll looks at round-trip travel.

All that time in the car means more miles on the car. The poll, conducted by Heart and Mind Strategies, also finds that about one in every three drivers is on the road more than 30 miles every day. About two in every 10 are on the road for more than 50 miles every day.

Individuals living in D.C tend to have the shortest commute, with 66 percent traveling less than ten miles and 41 percent traveling less than 30 minutes.

Maryland residents are traveling longer areas, with 70 percent of those polled driving more than 10 miles a day.

Virginia residents spend the most time on the road, with 74 percent traveling more than 10 miles a day, with 27 percent spending less than 30 minutes on the road.

Working married dads report the most travel in terms of distance and time spent traveling, with 36 percent traveling over 50 miles daily, with almost a quarter (22 percent) spending more than two hours on travel.

Almost half (48 percent) travel over one hour, with over 22 percent over 50 miles daily.

The poll also found that 48 percent of African Americans in the D.C. area spend over one hour on travel, compared with 36 percent of white individuals.

The national phone survey was conducted Oct. 10-13, 2011 among 641 U.S. adults ages 18 and up. The margin of error for a sample of this size is +/- 3.8 at 95 percent confidence.
