SCAGGSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Howard County police say a highway worker putting out cones in order to close a lane of traffic was struck by a car and killed.

The state highway contractor wearing a reflective shirt was closing a lane of westbound state Route 216 at Route 29 in the Scaggsville area on Tuesday night. That's when police say a Chevrolet Malibu struck the worker and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities have not released the worker's name, pending notification of the next of kin. The driver of the car remained on the scene.
