Howard County Council approves school zone cameras

Tuesday - 5/3/2011, 5:17am  ET

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) - The Howard County Council has voted to allow speed cameras in school zones.

The vote was taken Monday night after the council's lone opponent offered 13 amendments designed to limit the bill. County executive Ken Ulman has projected revenues of $1.2 million in his budget proposal that is now before the council. However, the program is expected to cost just under $1 million.

Critics say speed cameras an intrusion on privacy, while supporters say the cameras are a more efficient way to slow drivers down.

The council did amend the bill to limit the number of cameras to eight.
