The Washington Post may charge online readers

WASHINGTON – The Washington Post’s online website (washingtonpost.com) may take a page from the New York Times.

According to an article in the Post, the website may start charging online readers for access to its articles. Don Graham, chief executive of the Post, is currently studying the same paywall system that the Times implemented last year.

Because of declining revenue, news organizations across the country have started charging for online content. The Times charges online readers up to $35 each month for full access to its website and has nearly 600,000 digital subscribers. The new online fee could begin as early as the middle of next year.

WTOP’s general manager says there are no plans to charge for wtop.com.
