(AP) - SET ON TV: South Korean television manufacturers Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc. are betting billions on new technology that promises thinner screens with eye-popping clarity. Sony showed off the first organic light-emitting diode display in 2007 but never followed up with a screen bigger than 11 inches.
PREVIOUS EFFORTS: Samsung and LG saw 3-D TV and Internet-connected sets flop, but they're optimistic about the expensive new technology.
TV'S LAST GASP? It might prove the final big innovation from an industry facing the shift to smartphones and tablets. Sony's mainstay TV business has lost money for eight years straight.
