(AP) - FEWER JOBS POSTED: U.S. employers advertised 3.56 million jobs in August, or 32,000 fewer jobs than July, the Labor Department said. That meant about 3.5 unemployed people, on average, were competing for each opening job. In a healthy economy, the ratio is usually 2 to 1.

MORE JOBS FILLED: Companies hired 4.39 million people in August. It was jobs filled for a single month since May.

HIRING STILL SLOW: Employers have been hiring slowly since the recession ended more than three years ago. Openings have increased 63 percent since that time, but hiring is up only 15 percent.
