ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker is urging lawmakers to support a measure that would allow him to overhaul the county's school system.

At a joint hearing Monday, Prince George's senators and representatives considered testimony for a bill that would give Baker power to select the next superintendent.

The school system is searching for a new superintendent and has seen the position change hands five times in the last 10 years.

Baker says he presented his plan because of longstanding concerns that county residents have had about the school system, and insists that the plan would provide accountability and oversight.

Opponents argue that selection and supervision powers of the superintendent should remain in the hands of the county school board.
