Arthur Chu’s Jeopardy! style causes controversy

WASHINGTON — Don’t you hate it when you’re playing your favorite game and there’s that one person who throws everyone else off? Contestants on Jeopardy! are getting to know that feeling a little too well.

Arthur Chu, a recent four-time winner of Jeopardy!, has come under fire lately for his unique style of play.

Instead of starting from the top and working his way down each category, he picks the more difficult questions at random in hopes of finding the three coveted Daily Doubles.

Kotaku reports that this gives him the greatest chance of success.

Instead of playing for the win, Chu plays for the tie. He plays safely by betting just enough money to advance to the next round.

This strategy has created backlash on social media sites from faithful Jeopardy! fans who want Chu to play a more traditional style.

For Chu, these fans mean little. He is playing for real money and he intends to win as much of it as possible. More importantly his style is effective, if Chu wins one more game he will be invited to the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions.

Now it’s just wait-and-see if this strategy catches on with more contestants in the future.

“Good Morning America” discusses Chu’s strategy:
