WASHINGTON — Not all children were able to spend Father’s Day with their dads, especially those with fathers in jail.
“Sesame Street” is tackling the sensitive subject with a new character, Alex, who’s dad is incarcerated.
With spiky blue hair and a green nose, Alex is the first Muppet with this kind of family dynamic, Today.com reports.
The new character is part of the show’s “Little Children, Big Challenges: Incarceration” initiative, which helps children with a parent in jail cope and find outside support, Today reports.
“Coming from a Muppet, it’s almost another child telling their story to the children,” Jeanette Betancourt, vice president of outreach and educational practices at the Sesame Workshop, told Today.com.
Alex will not be a regular fixture on the show, but you can watch a clip of the Muppet here.
