The “Transformers” film franchise is far from extinct.

“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” the fourth installment in Paramount’s morphing robots series, earned $100 million in North America during its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut for a movie this year.

The sequel starring Mark Wahlberg as a human inventor who aids the hulking alien robots rolled over “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and its $95 million opening in April.

“Age of Extinction” was distantly followed at the box office by “22 Jump Street” in second place with $15.8 million and “How To Train Your Dragon 2” in third place with $13.2 million.
