BALTIMORE (AP) -- A student from Delaware who hopes to work as a journalist has been awarded the $61,000 Sophie Kerr Prize, the nation's largest literary prize for undergraduate college students.

Twenty-two-year-old Timothy Marcin of Wilmington was named the winner of the award Tuesday night in Baltimore. He will receive a check at Washington College's commencement later this month.

Marcin was one of five Washington College students who were finalists for the award. The 42-page portfolio he submitted included a first-person account of the Boston Marathon bombing, and poems.

Marcin says he will pursue a master's degree at Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.

He is a graduate of Concord High School in Wilmington and is co-captain of the Washington College soccer team.
