WTA plans World Cup teams event

SINGAPORE (AP) — The WTA is considering setting up its own World Cup team event, separate from the existing Fed Cup organized by the ITF.

WTA chief executive Stacey Allaster said the event is still in its embryonic stages, but initial plans are for an eight-team event held in one city over five days.

Allaster, speaking at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Saturday said “others are doing it and if we don’t do it someone else will do it.”

The WTA chief said not having the grand slam tournaments in control of the men’s and women’s tours was “one of the biggest mistakes that we have made and I don’t want to make the same mistake.”

The planned tournament would include seven invited teams based on rankings, and one wild card.
