Ogier leads Rally of Spain, closes on title

SALOU, Spain (AP) — Sebastian Ogier of France closed in on a second straight rally world title after opening a 36-second lead at the Rally of Spain on Friday.

Ogier steered his Volkswagen Polo through the day’s six stages covering almost 140 kilometers (87 miles) through mainly gravel roads in the northeastern region of Catalonia.

Teammate and nearest chaser Jari-Matti Latvala was second. The Finn must find a way to finish ahead of Ogier on Sunday to keep the title race alive until the season’s final rally in Wales.

Ogier leads Latvala by 27 points after 11 rounds.

Saturday’s six stages will be run on asphalt, covering 159 kilometers (99 miles).
