RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Joe Willis made two saves in the penalty kicks shootout, leading D.C. United past the Richmond Kickers 4-2 after a 0-0 draw Tuesday night in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup.

D.C. United hosts fellow MLS club Philadelphia Union on June 12.

United finished the game with nine men when Chris Korb earned his second yellow card and Carlos Ruiz was issued a straight red card in extra time.

In the shootout, Sascha Gorres and Joseph Ngwenya were each denied by consecutive diving saves to the left post by Willis before Luke Vercollone and Robinson converted their shots. United went 4 for 4, with Dwayne De Rosario, Perry Kitchen, Nick DeLeon and James Riley connecting for the win.

In the first half, De Rosario's header struck the goal post. Lionard Pajoy's header also rattled the crossbar for D.C.
