UPDATED: Severe Thunderstorm Warning In Effect Tuesday Evening

(Update at 7:12 p.m.) There are more than 1,000 Pepco customers without power in Bethesda-Chevy Chase as high winds sweep through the area, according to Pepco’s outage map.

(Update at 7:10 p.m.) The Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been extended to 8:30 p.m.

(Original) The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for a fast moving line of storms approaching the Washington area:

* SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING FOR…THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA… SOUTHERN MONTGOMERY COUNTY IN CENTRAL MARYLAND…

* UNTIL 715 PM EDT

* AT 620 PM EDT…SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WERE DETECTED ALONG A LINE EXTENDING FROM 5 MILES SOUTHWEST OF OATLANDS TO HUME TO 24 MILES SOUTHWEST OF HUME…AND WERE MOVING EAST AT 50 MPH. THIS LINE OF STORMS IS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING HAIL UP TO THE SIZE OF QUARTERS AND DESTRUCTIVE WINDS IN EXCESS OF 75 MPH.
