Easter egg hunt promotes Silver Spring businesses

SILVER SPRING, Md. — Hundreds of kids scoured Silver Spring’s small businesses on Saturday as part of a citywide Easter egg hunt.

With a map of the city in one hand and a purple bag in the other, 12-year-old Evan Litofsky had a loose strategy of how he planned to collect the most eggs.

“We’re just going from store to store really fast,” he said.

The map used to find the eggs contained locations of 30 businesses taking part in the citywide hunt organized by Silver Spring, Inc.

The eggs “are hidden inside the businesses and then they release more throughout the day, so there are eggs to collect as the event continues,” says Peter Tantisunthorn, co-founder of Silver Spring Inc.

Zed Mekonnen owns Zed’s Cafe on Georgia Avenue and participated in the daylong event.

“It gets families and kids together, and at the same time exposes businesses to new customers,” Mekonnen says. “It’s a wonderful idea.”

The kids found both plastic eggs with candy inside, and paper eggs designed by city artists that contain $5 gift cards to promote the local economy.

It is the first egg hunt put on by the business-minded community group.
