Montgomery County to consider school start times

Sunday - 9/15/2013, 8:10pm  ET

ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County officials will be considering whether to change high school start times to give teens more time for sleep.

The Washington Post (http://bit.ly/167jJgV ) reports the Montgomery County Board of Education is set to take up the issue at a meeting Oct. 8. The board will hear a presentation from the school system's "Bell Times Workgroup."

The group began meeting in January and has been evaluating research on teen sleep and school hours. In December, parents submitted about 10,000 signatures from an online petition, calling for high school classes to start at 8:15 a.m. or later.

Montgomery high schools currently start class at 7:25 a.m.

Some parents plan to press for a vote at the school board's October meeting.

Fairfax and Anne Arundel counties are also considering later start times.
