WASHINGTON - A horse was rescued from a muddy ditch Sunday afternoon in Poolesville.
Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to an area near Poole's Store in the 16400 block of Old River Road. They had received reports that a horse had gone off the trail.
Crews arrived to find the horse standing at the bottom of a five-foot ditch, stuck in 20-24 inches of mud.
Crews received help from a local Urban Search and Rescue Team that put together a rope pulley system to haul the horse out of the ditch.
They also called in the Days End Horse Farm for additional equipment. A veterinarian was on the scene to monitor the animal's health during the ordeal.
Crews pulled the horse out of the mud in about an hour. The horse was uninjured.
