Liverpool beats Olimpiakos 1-0 in Champions Cup

CHICAGO (AP) — Raheem Sterling scored in the fifth minute in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Olimpiakos on Sunday at Soldier Field in the International Champions Cup.

Sterling beat goalkeeper Balazs Megyeri with a leaping, right-footed half-volley from the center of the box to the bottom right corner in Liverpool’s Pool B opener.

Gevorg Ghazaryan nearly tied the match for Olimpiakos (1-1) in the 49th minute with a rocket off his right foot from the top of the box, but the shot squarely hit the bar and caromed off mark.

Olimpiakos had a chance in stoppage time, but Andres Samaris’ right-footed shot from just outside the box was knocked away by Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones.

Liverpool will face Manchester City on July 30 in Yankee Stadium. Olimpiakos finishes pool play Aug. 2 against Manchester City in Minneapolis.
