Ward’s 3rd-period goal lifts Caps over Canadiens

MONTREAL (AP) — Joel Ward snapped a scoreless tie with 1:29 left to lift the Washington Capitals to a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in an NHL preseason game on Sunday.

Backup goalie Justin Peters stopped all seven shots he faced before being replaced by Braden Holtby midway through the second period. Holtby made 11 saves for the combined shutout.

Brooks Laich added an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Carey Price made 29 saves for Montreal in his first full game of the preseason.

Price was solid after recovering from a knee injury sustained in last season’s playoffs. He made key saves in the third period against Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom.

The game was sloppy, with 12 minor penalties called — including each team being whistled for too many men on the ice in the first period.

Washington didn’t score after a major penalty to Jarred Tinordi, who was ejected for elbowing unsuspecting Nate Schmidt in the face with his shoulder.
