Indians C Yan Gomes placed on 7-day concussion DL

Saturday - 8/23/2014, 7:50pm  ET

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians placed catcher Yan Gomes on the seven-day concussion disabled list Saturday.

Gomes, hit in the mask Thursday after a pitch deflected off Minnesota's Kurt Suzuki, was still experiencing symptoms after taking part in some light activity Friday and Saturday. Indians manager Terry Francona said the team is taking a cautious approach and doesn't want to rush Gomes back into action.

Roberto Perez started at catcher Saturday night against Houston for the second straight game, and Francona said first baseman Carlos Santana could play a few innings behind the plate if necessary.

Gomes is batting .284 with 17 homers and 53 RBIs.

To replace him on the roster, the Indians acquired catcher Chris Gimenez from Texas for future considerations.

Gimenez batted .262 with 11 RBIs in 34 games with the Rangers before being designated for assignment Aug. 7. Five days later he was sent outright to Triple-A Round Rock, where he was 10 for 25 (.400) with two homers and six RBIs in seven games since.

Gimenez was drafted by Cleveland in 2004 and spent parts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Indians. He was expected to join the team Sunday.
