Diamondbacks outlast Phillies 12-7 in 18 innings
PHILADELPHIA -- Adam Eaton hit a go-ahead double in the 18th inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks outlasted the Philadelphia Phillies 12-7 in a record-setting, marathon game for both clubs Saturday night.
The teams combined to use 20 pitchers in a contest that ended at 2:12 a.m. EDT and took 7 hours, 6 minutes -- setting a mark for length of game for both teams.
The Phillies began the 18th with outfielder Casper Wells (0-1) on the mound. After retiring the first two batters, Wells walked Tony Campana to start Arizona's five-run frame. With Campana running, Eaton lined a double to left-center to put Arizona in front 8-7.
After Wells intentionally walked Paul Goldschmidt, Martin Prado drove in Eaton with a single to right to give the Diamondbacks a two-run advantage. Gerardo Parra broke the game open with a two-run single that spelled the end for Wells, who was replaced by another position player, infielder John McDonald.
Chargers take advantage of mistakes, beat Arizona
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- Ryan Mathews rushed for 57 yards and a touchdown in a half of play and the San Diego Chargers beat mistake-prone Arizona 24-7 Saturday night for their first preseason victory under new coach Mike McCoy.
The Chargers blocked a punt, blocked a field goal and returned a fumble for a touchdown.
The Cardinals lost several players due to injury, including left guard Jonathan Cooper, the team's first-round pick who put no weight on his left ankle as he was helped off the field in the third quarter.
Arizona's Rashard Mendenhall carried six times for 47 yards before leaving with an ankle injury.
Philip Rivers completed 10 of 18 passes for 71 yards with an interception. Arizona's Carson Palmer was 12 of 23 for 122 yards and a TD.
Diamondbacks place reliever Putz on 15-day DL
PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks placed right-handed reliever J.J. Putz on the 15-day DL on Saturday with a dislocated right pinky finger and recalled right-hander Chaz Roe from Triple-A Reno.
Putz hurt his finger in Friday night's 4-3 defeat to the Philadelphia Phillies. Putz is 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 35 games this season. Roe, a rookie reliever, pitched in five games this season for the Diamondbacks and went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA.
Bills QB Kevin Kolb has concussion-like symptoms
LANDOVER, Md. (AP) -- Buffalo Bills quarterback Kevin Kolb has concussion-like symptoms after getting kneed in the back of the helmet.
Sidelined by a concussion in 2011 with Arizona, Kolb was hurt at the end of an 8-yard scramble in the first quarter Saturday against the Washington Redskins.
Kolb remained in the game for four more plays, until the drive ended with a 2-yard touchdown run by C.J. Spiller.
Kolb has been competing for the starting job with first-round pick EJ Manuel, but Manuel hurt his left knee in the Bills' previous game and is out for the rest of the preseason.
With both Manuel and Kolb hurt, undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel became the only healthy quarterback on the roster. Tuel entered the game on the next series.
