Cubs RHP Fujikawa off DL, RHP Dolis to Triple A

Friday - 5/10/2013, 10:30pm  ET

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Kyuji Fujikawa was activated from the 15-day disabled list before Friday night's game against the Washington Nationals.

Fujikawa was on the DL since April 13 because of a strained right forearm.

"I let the team down. ... I would like to contribute more," he said through an interpreter.

He came into Friday's game in the seventh and threw one scoreless inning, with one hit and one strikeout.

The major league rookie entered Friday 1-0 with two saves and a 12.46 ERA in 4 1-3 innings in his first five appearances with the Cubs.

Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Kevin Gregg will stay in the closer's role, while Fujikawa will be used in various situations, although eventually could move to ninth-inning duties.

"I'm going to ease him in right now to take a look at him, make sure everything's going good -- velocity, command, life and all that. I'm just going to kind of ease him into whatever situation -- sixth, seventh inning -- depending on the score of the game," Sveum said.

Said Fujikawa: "Who knows what role I'll play in, but wherever the manager says, I'll pitch in that role."

Entering Friday, Gregg converted all five save opportunities he'd had this season, throwing 8 1-3 scoreless innings.

To make room on the roster for Fujikawa, the Cubs optioned right-handed reliever Rafael Dolis to Triple-A Iowa. Dolis has made two appearances with Chicago this season and hasn't allowed an earned run in 1 2-3 innings.

Sveum juggled his lineup a bit, moving shortstop Starlin Castro into the leadoff spot for the first time this season. Center fielder David DeJesus, who led off in 25 of Chicago's 34 games before Friday, was out of the starting lineup.

Ryan Sweeney started in center field.
