ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- Yankees infielder Kevin Youkilis was scratched from the starting lineup for Monday night's series opener at Tampa Bay because of back pain.
Youkilis missed Sunday's game at Toronto due to lower back stiffness and was in the original lineup against the Rays at first base. New York said his back tightened up after he took batting practice. Youkilis, the replacement for injured starter Mark Teixeira, was in turn replaced by Lyle Overbay.
Yankees outfielder Curtis Granderson hit off a tee and swung at soft toss throws for the first time since breaking his right forearm in his first at-bat of spring training, when he was hit by a pitch from Toronto's J.A. Happ on Feb. 24. Granderson was in the Yankees clubhouse after working out at the team's minor league complex across the bay in Tampa.
"It's hard to really say, it's going to be somewhere in May, I don't know exactly when," Granderson said. "But everything is looking pretty good. X-rays have all be good. Everything is feeling good, each step that we've made."
Granderson and shortstop Derek Jeter are among the Yankees' players that have been rehabbing in Tampa.
Jeter found out last Thursday that he fractured his left ankle for a second time in six months.
"It's not like he did his trying to do too much," Granderson said. "I think it was something that had been lingering in there. From talking to him, 'Man, there's something irriating in there, what is it? They looked at a bunch of different things and finally found it."
New York says Jeter won't play until after the All-Star break.
"The big thing for him was he finally knows what it," Granderson said. "I think he was definitely frustrated, like "Ok, why is there is something going on?' Everything says it's OK. We're trying this, that and the other, and we're going out trying to push forward, but I can't. Something causes that. Mentally it's discouraging because you understand now what it is. But now we know."
Yankees right-hander Michael Pineda, who last season after right shoulder surgery, threw one inning in his first simulated game.
