TORONTO (AP) -- The Blue Jays have finalized a $16 million, two-year contract with All-Star game MVP Melky Cabrera, who will be coming off a 50-game suspension for a positive test for testosterone. The 28-year-old was leading the National League in hitting at .346, with 11 homers and 60 RBIs when he was suspended Aug. 15.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Royals have signed right-hander Jeremy Guthrie to a $25 million, three-year deal, adding another piece to what should be a retooled starting rotation next season. The 33-year-old was acquired in a midseason trade from Colorado. He'll join a rotation that includes newcomers Ervin Santana from the Angels and Chris Volstad, who was claimed off waivers from the Cubs.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -- Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed will avoid a one-game suspension after filing an appeal. Instead, he'll be fined $50,000. Reed was suspended for a game without pay yesterday by NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks for his hit to the head of Pittsburgh receiver Emmanuel Sanders Sunday night. It was Reed's third violation in three seasons of the rule prohibiting helmet-to-helmet hits against defenseless players.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Steelers coach Mike Tomlin says 37-year old Charlie Batch will start at quarterback against Cleveland this week in the wake of injuries to starter Ben Roethlisberger (RAWTH'-lihs-bur-gur) and back-up Byron Leftwich. Pittsburgh has signed former Steeler Plaxico Buress to shore up a receiving corps that has also been thinned by injuries.
NEW YORK (AP) -- Rutgers is leaving the Big East conference to become a member of the Big Ten in 2014. The move comes a day after Maryland announced it was dropping out of the ACC to join the Big Ten as well. Rutgers will become the Big Ten's 14th member.
