Md. man gets 2 years for federal gun violation

BALTIMORE (AP) — A federal judge sentenced a man already serving prison time to two additional years behind bars for a gun violation committed eight weeks after he was released from prison on prior gun charges.

Hasan Smith pleaded guilty in federal court in Baltimore Tuesday to a gun violation stemming from an illegal gun charge. He is currently serving a five-year sentence for the charge.

U.S. District Judge Frederick Motz said he had no choice but to jail Smith for the statutory maximum in order to “protect the safety” of the community.

Smith was convicted on federal gun charges in 2012 and was sentenced to 15 ½ years. He was resentenced after a state judge vacated three of his prior drug convictions, and Smith was released after roughly three years in jail.
