Boy, 6, gets hand caught in escalator

WASHINGTON — A six-year-old boy has been released from a local hospital, after getting his hand and fingers stuck at the bottom of an escalator handrail inside the Iverson Mall in Prince George’s County on Thursday night.

The boy was released from the hospital at 2 a.m., according to The Washington Post.

Firefighters were called to the Burlington Coat Factory a little after 8:30 p.m.; it took them two hours to free the boy.

Rescuers cut the escalator apart and had to remove parts of a wall to gain access to the entire escalator.

Prince George’s County Fire and EMS spokesman Mark Brady said in a tweet that getting the boy’s hand loose was “challenging and tedious.” Brady also says that at least one of the boy’s parents was with the child.

He says with the boy’s mother’s permission, medics administered pain medication to calm the boy.

The extent of the boy’s injuries is unknown.
