MIDDLE RIVER, Md. (AP) -- Two snowy owls, a male and a female, have been captured and relocated from Martin State Airport east of Baltimore.

The Maryland Aviation Administration says the birds were trapped on Thursday night and Friday morning. They will be banded and relocated far away from the airport, and the female will be fitted with a transmitter.

Increasing numbers of snowy owls have been seen throughout the eastern United States this winter. They are ranked among the bird species most likely to cause damage when struck by airplanes.

A snowy owl was found at Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in December. An in January, a snowy owl that had perched atop The Washington Post building was hit by a bus in downtown Washington and taken to the National Zoo for treatment.
