Sunday - 9/22/2013, 4:50pm  ET

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) -- A student at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore has been shot and wounded in an off-campus incident in Princess Anne, and the school sent an alert to the campus community.

University spokesman Bill Robinson tells The Daily Times (http://delmarvane.ws/18jozMX ) that the student was treated and released from a hospital. There has been no word of an arrest.

University Police Chief Ernest Leatherbury was notified early Sunday. Princess Ann police were investigating. A UMES alert was sent out at 5:07 a.m., urging students to be vigilant. But there were no further updates after several hours. Students took to twitter to ask questions.

A student was stabbed to death last February in a crime that remains unsolved. Campus officials say it was the first killing of a student in 35 years.
