OCEAN CITY, Md. (AP) -- Town leaders have rejected a plan to allow surf fishermen to drive on Ocean City beaches.
The Daily Times reports (http://delmarvane.ws/14qXYZR ) that the town council unanimously voted Tuesday to drop the proposal in response to public opposition.
Mayor Rick Meehan says the comments he received were overwhelmingly negative.
Last month, Councilman Joe Mitrecic proposed allowing surf fishermen to bring their vehicles onto the beach between November and March, and charge $75 for a permit. Drivers would have to also possess a fishing permit.
The town would have needed state approval before passing an ordinance to allow it, but support fell apart and the council killed the proposal this week with a unanimous vote.
