Police: Argument preceded Salisbury shooting

Wednesday - 9/4/2013, 6:40pm  ET

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Authorities say a former boyfriend of a Salisbury University nursing student argued with her before shooting her and another man and fatally shooting himself.

Police said Wednesday that 21-year-old Ryan Shallue of Stevensville traveled from Queen Anne's County to the off-campus home of his 20-year-old former girlfriend, Kristen Loetz. Police say the pair argued Tuesday evening. When a friend of the woman, 19-year-old Charles Abbott, tried to intervene, police say Shallue pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and opened fire.

Abbott was killed, and Loetz was critically injured. Police say Shallue then fatally shot himself.

Loetz is an honors student at Salisbury, and Abbott is a former student there. Loetz and Shallue graduated from Kent Island High School in 2010. Police say they had not been dating for several months.
