Monday - 8/19/2013, 5:20pm  ET

SEVERN, Md. (AP) -- Anne Arundel County fire officials say a man has died after a trench collapsed and buried him.

Division Chief Keith Swindle says firefighters were called to the home on Leyton Lane about 10 a.m. Monday for a report of a person in a collapsed trench.

Officials say the 25-year-old man was working on a home improvement project in an unsecured 7-foot-deep trench behind a home when it collapsed and buried him.

Authorities say it took 45 rescue personnel 3 ½ hours to recover the man's body.

Maryland Occupational Safety and Health is investigating the accident.
