COLUMBIA, Md. (AP) -- Howard County police say an officer shot a man who was brandishing a knife inside a Columbia store.
The shooting occurred after 11 a.m. Wednesday inside a BJ's Wholesale Club store on Snowden River Parkway. Police say when the man was approached by security staff for shoplifting, he threatened them with a knife.
Officers say the man ran from the store, picked up a stick and smashed the glass door of a bus. He could not get on the bus, so police say the man ran back into the store, still brandishing the knife.
Authorities say the man was confronted by a police officer and was shot.
Police said the man, identified as 33-year-old Howard Carvel Smith of Columbia, was in critical condition at Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
