AAA Mid-Atlantic expects decline in July 4 travel

TOWSON, Md. -- AAA Mid-Atlantic is projecting a slight decline in the number of residents from Maryland and the Washington area traveling at least 50 miles from home during the Independence Day holiday.

AAA is estimating 798,400 Marylanders will be traveling. That's a decline of less than 1 percent compared to last year. In the Washington area, AAA projects 967,000 people will travel. That's a decline of 1.8 percent.

AAA says the expected decline is primarily due to a shorter holiday period. July 4 falls on a Thursday this year, while it fell on a Wednesday last year. The holiday travel period is defined as July 3-7.

About 106,000 Delaware residents are expected to travel for the holiday. That's about the same as last year.
