Fake bomb evacuates Maryland car rental facility

Saturday - 6/22/2013, 3:52pm  ET

HANOVER, Md. (AP) -- The Maryland State Fire Marshal says a fake bomb device forced the evacuation of an Avis car rental facility in Anne Arundel County.

Authorities say the device was discovered Friday evening around 8:30 p.m. and drew the Maryland State Bomb Squad, the Annapolis City Bomb Squad and others to the scene in Hanover. The Baltimore-Washington International Airport fire department also responded to the facility.

Officials used a robot to allow bomb technicians to examine the suspicious package and determine it was a "hoax device." Bomb squad crews worked on the scene for more than four hours to ensure the area was safe.

State officials are investigating to determine who left the device at the car rental facility.
