BALTIMORE (AP) -- Baltimore police say a 20-year veteran of the department has barricaded himself in a west Baltimore home. A woman was shot before the standoff and the officer's toddler son, whom he had with him in the home, has been released.
Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi (goog-lee-EL-mee) says the officer, James Smith, barricaded himself back in the home after releasing his young son Tuesday evening. Police negotiators were working to get Smith to surrender peacefully.
The incident began about 3:45 p.m. Guglielmi says a woman who was shot and gravely injured was taken to Shock Trauma. It was not known what started the incident.
The spokesman says Smith works in the motor unit of the special operations section, and that he has some tactical training.
Neighborhood residents were told to stay inside.
