Md. Police: Trooper shoots man fleeing stop

SALISBURY, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State police say a trooper shot a driver who grabbed the trooper's arm and sped off from a traffic stop with the trooper hanging in the car window.

The trooper pulled over a Honda early Tuesday near Salisbury after police say he saw the car swerve.

During a sobriety test, police say 23-year-old Harry Wyatt-Swift tried to drive off. That's when police say Trooper First Class Richard Keidel tried to pull the keys from the ignition and Wyatt-Swift held the trooper's arm as he drove away.

After Wyatt-Swift refused to stop, police say Keidel shot him in the abdomen and face. Wyatt-Swift let go and drove on. The trooper later found the Honda overturned and Wyatt-Swift surrendered.

Wyatt-Swift is under guard while his wounds are treated. Charges are pending.
