Anne Arundel's top firefighter to retire May 1

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Anne Arundel's top firefighter will retire May 1 after 35 years with the department.

The Capital of Annapolis (http://bit.ly/10G3hmZ) reports county officials announced Fire Chief John Robert Ray's retirement Friday.

Ray was appointed fire chief in July of 2008 and led a staff of more than 1,700. He did not give a reason for his retirement but said in a statement that he looks forward to spending more time with his family.
