Fracking opponents to seek moratorium

Wednesday - 9/12/2012, 6:16pm  ET

BALTIMORE - Opponents of the natural gas drilling technique known as fracking have launched a campaign for a moratorium on the practice.

Delegate Heather Mizeur said Wednesday opponents want to prevent fracking in Maryland until the state finishes a comprehensive, science-based review on the dangers the process poses to drinking water and public health. She says only then the Legislature could vote on whether or not to allow fracking to proceed.

Drew Cobs, executive director of the Maryland Petroleum Council, says the group opposes the plan. He says a de facto moratorium already is in place in Maryland until 2014.

Fracking has already begun in states like Pennsylvania, where some critics say it has contaminated water sources.
