Metro employee struck by train at Shady Grove

WASHINGTON – A Metro employee is in serious condition after being struck and pinned by a train at the Shady Grove Yard shortly before 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

The employee, a 25-year veteran mechanic at Metro, is conscious but his injuries are potentially life-threatening, authorities say.

He was pinned underneath for about one hour as rescue crews worked to extricate him.

The incident occurred in a closed area north of the Shady Grove Metro station, which means the train could not have been going very fast, authorities say.

He has been taken to a trauma center.

The train was not in service at the time of the accident and Red Line service is not affected.

Metro says safety practices are being reviewed.
