Former teacher sues Anne Arundel schools for $8M

Sunday - 5/6/2012, 6:20am  ET

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A former Anne Arundel County teacher has filed an age-discrimination lawsuit against the school system, saying she was bypassed for promotion in favor of younger teachers.

The Baltimore Sun reports 62-year-old Christine Davenport filed her multimillion-dollar federal lawsuit this week in U.S. District Court in Baltimore. She joined the school system in 1972 and spent years teaching gifted students at MacArthur Middle School.

The $8 million lawsuit contents Davenport studied for an administrative certificate and became an administrative intern in 2005. But she was passed over for assistant principal jobs while the school system picked younger teachers, some who hadn't completed their certificates.

The lawsuit alleges a younger candidate was given a "cheat sheet" before his interview and shared it with Davenport.

The school system has declined to comment.
