Public ceremony honoring Barry likely to be held next week

WASHINGTON — A public ceremony honoring four-time D.C. Mayor Marion Barry will
likely happen next week, according to people involved in the planning. The
transformative political will also lie in repose at the Wilson Building.

Current Mayor Vince Gray called it “hugely important” that Barry get a fitting
tribute.

The former mayor and Ward 8 council member died early Sunday morning.

“The commitments he made and the work that he did in this city are absolutely
extraordinary,” Gray says. “I don’t have any doubt that it will be a multi-day
event that will include him lying in state at the Wilson Building.”

A set time and location for the public ceremony has not yet been determined. Gray
believes tens of thousands of people will want to pay their respects.

“I think if you let everybody participate that wants to participate, you’d be here
for the entire month of December,” he says.
