70 pct. of Va. students graduate within 6 years

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A new report says 70 percent of students attending Virginia’s four-year public colleges and universities graduate within six years.

The report says only Delaware has a higher graduation rate with 73 percent.

The report was released by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. It’s based on the group of students who began attending college in 2007.

According to the report, Christopher Newport University’s graduation rate increased from 59 percent to 79 percent over the last eight years. Graduation rates at George Mason and Virginia Commonwealth universities increased by 10 percent points each during the same period.

Student debt increased along with graduation rates. The report says the percentage of graduates with bachelor degrees who have student debt rose from 53 percent in 2007-2008 to 57 percent in 2011-2012.
