Virginia Intermont, Webber drop merger plan

Wednesday - 4/16/2014, 11:33am  ET

BRISTOL, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Intermont College and Webber International University have dropped a plan to merge.

Virginia Intermont President E. Clorisa Phillips announced the decision in a statement issued Tuesday.

Phillips says the two schools don't have a viable model for a merger. She didn't provide details.

Virginia Intermont is appealing a decision by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges' decision to drop the private liberal arts school from its membership. The commission has attributed the decision to Virginia Intermont's finances.

Phillips says the school will complete the spring semester and will continue to work on its financial situation.

Webber President Keith Wade told The Bristol Herald Courier (http://bit.ly/1qZNNWP ) that he couldn't discuss the proposed merger due to a confidentiality agreement.
