PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Petersburg plans to renovate a historic depot into a National Park Service visitor center.
Built in 1854, the South Side Depot served the South Side Railroad. During the Civil War, the Confederates used the station during the siege of Petersburg to receive supplies.
The Progress-Index (http://bit.ly/1eChwCJ ) reports that City Council recently voted to move forward with plans to renovate the building.
Work is scheduled to being this spring and to be completed this summer.
The project will be funded with grants from the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Civil War Trust.
