SALEM, Va. (AP) -- Juan Thornhill threw a touchdown pass and Destin Brown and Clydale Moon ran for scores Saturday, lifting Altavista to a 21-0 victory against Essex in the VHSL's Group 1A championship game at Salem Stadium.
The Colonels (14-1) intercepted three passes and recovered a fumble and won their first state title since 2009.
Essex (13-2) turned the ball over on its first two offensive plays, the latter setting up Thornhill's 19-yard scoring pass to Demitre Maulbeck.
The Trojans managed just 56 yards of offense and finished as the runner-up for the second consecutive season.
Essex stopped the Colonels after Dominek Broaddus' pass was intercepted and returned to the 9 yard-line on the Trojans' first offensive play. Essex stuffed Thornhill on fourth down, but after DaJour Ashlock caught a pass, he fumbled, Altavista recovering at the 16 yard-line.
Thornhill's TD pass made it 7-0 with 8:50 left in the first quarter.
