ROCKY MOUNT, Va. (AP) -- Rocky Mount is removing a hazardous low-head dam on the Pigg River.

Assistant town manager Matt Hankins tells The Roanoke Times ( ) that Rocky Mount has been working to modify or remove several low-head dams since 2009. That year, two people died near a low-head dam on the Blackwater River.

Low-head dams allow water to flow over the top, creating a hydraulic effect at the bottom.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is providing funding for the Pigg River project as part of an effort to save the endangered Roanoke logperch.

Dave Byrd with the federal agency says siltation caused by dams has disrupted the fish's habitat.

Byrd says the project will cost an estimated $110,000. Hankins says the town will pay no more than $30,000.
