ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- The prosecution of a Rocky Mount police officer accused of making "straw" purchases of firearms has been delayed until the U.S. Supreme Court decides a similar case involving a former Virginia police officer.

James Marion Slate was charged last summer with conspiring to make straw purchases of firearms. Straw purchases typically involve a person who legally buys a firearm but does so for someone forbidden to own one such as a criminal.

According to federal prosecutors, Slate and David Carson Haskins of Bassett conspired in late 2012 and early this year to recruit straw buyers.

The Roanoke Times ( reports that Slate and Haskins have agreed to guilty pleas -- provided they are entered after the Supreme Court rules in the case of a former Roanoke police officer.
